The train journey took 4 and a half hours. We passed the time talking to some young male law students. One of them was hoping to follow his brother to Newcastle, England to study. We could only think of the culture shock his brother would have had when he arrived in England for the first time, then getting used to the weather and then there is the Gordie language to contend with! Nothing much happened is Kottayam in our only night there only to say that we had checked into a hotel on arrival in the afternoon where we dumped the bags and went out to explore town. After doing Internet and MSN with the mummies we went and had a lovely meal in a rather swanky hotel restaurant. On leaving and noticing how hot it was still at 10.30pm, we enquired how much it was to stay one night. A/C double was a snip at 13 pounds. We duly returned to our original hotel room to find that it had turned into a sauna. It was boiling! We immediately donned our backpacks and left for the swanky A/C hotel. We didn't bother with a refund for we only paid about 4 fine English pounds and it was worth it for the laugh we had as we walked ...

We boarded a packed minibus at midnight and spent a very uncomfortable 7 hours as the driver crawled along in the darkness. All was forgotten when we jumped on the fast ferry to the Perhentian islands taking in the incredibly clear aquamarine waters of this exquisite part of Malaysia. The boat trip was like a rollercoaster as our young captain tried to break the sound barrier. We stayed one night on the famous long beach where the hut was very basic with no electricity or hot water. As long beach is so popular the prices here were completely inflated. The next afternoon we trekked with our backpacks through the intense heat and jungle across the islands interior to Coral Bay where we made a deal to stay the remainder of our time in the newly opened Shari La Hotel. All for the same price including A/C, 24hr electricity and cable tv showing the Euro 2008 championships...result!! We've not long bought a laptop in Perth a couple of weeks ago and it's so much easier to get them out now- we'll be back on track soon. I'm writing this from a bench outside in the sunshine and we're actually sitting a few metres away from the beach at Monkey Mia (where we now work) with a load of dolphins swimming and playing right in front of us in the shallow, clear water..........as far as working environments' go it's not bad at all. The Perhentian Islands wins the prize hands down for the most under-developed, idyllic and stunning island we've been so far. The water here is the clearest we've ever seen (even better than Ko Tao) and the snorkeling is out of this world (I'll get onto swimming with a load of sharks later). After a VIP overnight coach journey (Laura mentions on the Panang blog) from West to East Coast Malaysia we still had 2 boats to catch until we reached the Islands.
